Twist and Shout is a major piece for me. It was the first to receive a major award and was a breakthrough work technically and aesthetically. Previously to this I was working on the Canvas Series, in which all the panels were composed of woven strips of glass and fused on to an undulating backing panel. Technically those were nuts. Large, fragile, woven panels that I then proceeded to unravel as the series progressed to expose the fluid nature of the glass underlying the weave. Twist and Shout was the first panel after the Canvas Series and not only is a strong expression of fluidity but it is insulated.
It is composed of a clear front panel, formed and fumed. And a back panel of formed black glass. The depth of contour is 1.5" and the air space between the panels is .25". That means that both panels had to be exactly the same. They were then sealed using a special heat set insulating desiccant filled spacer. The effect is outstanding. When I exhibit it I have been asked the question, "Where do you plug it in?"
