Mask of Fish and Fowl started life as a commission piece for Ken Hagard and Polly Cooper. They are renowned architects and head the firm San Luis Solar Group. Unfortunately, some years back, their home and offices burned down in a canyon wild fire. Total loss. It was so hot it melted steel beams. So they rebuilt on the same site and asked me to design and make the interior doors, clerestory windows, cabinet faces and light sconces. The site was historically a trout farm and they wanted to honor that by incorporating the theme of birds, fish and water in the pieces. Hence the design of Mask of Fish and Fowl. Which was rejected by Ken and Polly. Duende is the design that evolved from the process. Lucklly, Mask of Fish and Fowl was chosen by the Corning Museum of Glass as one of the significant pieces made in the world during 1999. When I told Ken that the rejected design was awarded by Corning he was totally unfazed. "The design I have is better." What could be better. Everybody’s happy.
